This installation of OVERCASTE at the Mills Institute brings one of the first caste-focused exhibits in North America to a new academic and community context. The exhibit centers the lived experiences of caste in Punjabi and South Asian diasporic communities, using oral histories, archival materials, and visual storytelling to surface both harm and resistance. Hosted in collaboration with institutional partner Mills Institute of Northeastern University, the exhibit invites students, faculty, and community members to confront caste, reflect on solidarity, and envision casteless futures.

On Saturday, January 24th, attendees from across the Bay Area came together to celebrate Overcaste. We were honoured to have scholar and activist Aatika Singh, curator and community organizer Manu Kaur join our team members Dr. Sasha Sabherwal and Anita Lal.

The following testimonials answering to the question “What was the highlight for you?” evidence the impact of the event:

"I’ve grown up with caste being so visible and everywhere around me, but also denied with comments like 'we don’t believe in caste.' The exhibit and panel felt very validating." – T.S.

"Hearing from the panelists as they shared their stories, experiences and all the wonderful work they're all doing. Thank you for this amazing panel and exhibit." – A.

"Caste shows up differently in every community, and the conversations on caste in South Asian communities always felt off. This was the first time learning about caste in my own Punjabi context." – T.S.

"Sharing of life histories. People were so willing to be vulnerable." – L.D.P.
